Schefflera: The only bonsai you won't kill

Schefflera: The only bonsai you won't kill

Almost any bonsai tree will die indoors. This is a major drag because bonsai trees are awesome.

A Schefflera is not technically a bonsai (because they have a non-woody stem? Or some other reason.), but it looks like a mini tree, so it gets the job done. They are a tropical evergreen shrub, which would mean it is bonsai by this definition. "... an ornamental tree or shrub grown in a pot and artificially prevented from reaching its normal size."

Anyway, these are tough and do well in low light conditions. You can water them daily, every other day, once a week? It doesn't really give a damn!

Scheffleras are a no-go if you have pets that could possibly eat a plant.

I have a Schefflera. Its first few years in Ohio was in a south facing window in direct sun. Then we got a cat, the plant was moved to the basement to a glass block window, and didn't do as well there. May have gotten too cold. It was down to 2-3 leaf clusters, some leaves missing from those. I got a grow light and some fertilizer sticks and it came back. It stayed there for a few years, and we moved to Florida. I kept it outside, near a sprinkler and no fertilizer. It flourished there, started flowering, which I had never seen in Ohio. Now we're in Georgia, and it was in the garage in the winter, watered once every two weeks and its still going pretty decent, though it did drop leaves. I've moved it outside and it gets rain from time to time, and I try to water it as well. I've started doing fertilizer again, and its seems to be doing better.

You can get one from your local gardening store, Amazon, Wigert's Bonsai Nursery, or Walmart.
